‘Be Very Careful,’ Trump Says, ‘Gang Members’ And ‘Drug Dealers’ Could Try To Enter US From Bahamas

In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, thousands of Bahamians have been displaced and are seeking refuge in the U.S.

But without “totally proper documentation,” as Trump said Monday (September 9), they may not be allowed to enter the country.

“I don’t want to allow people that weren’t supposed to be in the Bahamas to come into the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members, and some very, very bad drug dealers. So, we’re going to be very strong on that,” Trump said on Monday to reporters just before a scheduled visit to the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Dorian in North Carolina, ABC reports.

“Unfortunately, bad people use a crisis like this to try to gain entry into the United States illegally,” the acting director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mark Morgan, said on CNN’s “New Day” on Tuesday (September 10), CBS reports

He added that “extreme vetting” by the agency will help prevent that.

Morgan echoed the statements Trump made on Monday when he said “proper documentation” would help prevent “very bad people” from coming to the U.S., reports CBS.

“Those individuals who do make it to the United States that don’t have travel documents … we’re going to apply discretion on a case-by-case basis,” Morgan told CNN

This comes after more than 100 people were kicked off a ferry in the Bahamas heading to the U.S. on Sunday (September 8).

“It breaks my heart because it’s like when you raise somebody’s hopes and then you pop the balloon… That, in my opinion, is what Balearia did,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Michael Silva told Newsweek after the incident, blaming the ferry company for the mishap.

On Tuesday, Morgan commented on Sunday’s fiasco.

“We’re going to do what we always do and that’s properly vet everybody,” he told CNN. “And if they don’t have those travel documents, it’s going to slow the process down.”
